Guyanese Laymen Learn Greek
Twenty-two persons in the Guyana Conference graduated after attending a seven-month course designed to equip laymen with a working knowledge of Greek as it relates to the New Testament Bible. These men, women, and a few children met on Sundays from 9:00am to 11:00am at the Conference Annex to learn Koiné (common Greek). A few Bible Workers of the Guyana Conference also grabbed the opportunity to receive the training.
The idea of conducting a Greek class for laymen was conceived by Pastor Cleophas Quashie in Miami Florida in 2007. During that year, he successfully conducted two such classes at the Northwest Dade and the Kings’ Chapel Adventist churches in Miami. When he decided to be in Guyana to assist his wife in managing the mobile health unit operated by the Guyana Conference, he also prepared to operate a Greek class. It was Pastor Quashie’s hope to use his knowledge of the language to help lay people to improve their understanding of scripture and further the effectiveness of their preaching.
This first group of Guyanese laypersons privileged to benefit from the venture was graduated on April 18, 2009 at the Central Seventh-day Adventist Church. Executive Secretary of the Guyana Conference, Pastor Stanton Adams, delivered the graduation sermon. Also present at the ceremony was Dr. Hilton Garnett, President of the Conference along with others pastors and Conference workers.
Pastor Quashie plans to conduct subsequent classes in the near future.
